Tearjerker's Home Page

The Tearjerker's were five young lads from Northern Ireland who formed a power pop/punk band in 1978 amid the Punk explosion of the late seventies. The TJ's performed classic power pop tunes and toured Ireland both North and South extensively. Signed to cult Belfast record label Good Vibrations they where quickly snapped up by English record label Phonogram.

The Tearjerkers were to individualistic to fit into the typical punk mould. While other contempory Belfast bands where content to ape the London scene the Tearjerkers music was influenced by the American scene - i.e. Ramones - Big Star - Velvet Underground and UK bands Dr Feelgood - The Jam - Secret Affair and Nick Lowe. On the verge of breaking through to the big time they disintegrated due to big business getting in the way of good music!

The Tearjerkers were well known for their desire to have fun both with their music and also at their gigs. Typical Tearjerker gigs would include a audience 'secret auction' where the crowd would get prizes, lots of dancing and one or two drinks. The band wrote most of their stage material due to every member of band's ability to write pop songs.

The Tearjerkers seemed to appear from nowhere on the Belfast scene - this was due to Nigel's ability to get the band gigs from Coleraine to Cork so when the band started playing in the Capital they where already a very tight outfit. As soon as they signed up for Good Vibrations Records they organised a 'Good Vibrations Tour' and organised a province wide tour that provided a platform for the Tearjerkers, Rudi and Outcasts.
